Cabinet committee on security headed by PM Modi approved the Indian space policy 2023 on April 6th.

During a cabinet briefing, MoS science and technology, Jitendra Singh, said that the policy is aimed at enhancing the role of India's space department in global platform and to give larger participation opportunities to research, academia, start up and industry.

The union minister re-called PM Modi 's vision to open up space sector for private participation that had led to growth of start ups in ISRO, which has now reached 150 numbers in last 3 years.

Assigning Roles & responsibilities;

This policy defines the roles and responsibilities of organisations such as ISRO, NewSpace India limited (NSIL) & Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation centre(IN-SPACe) and other Indian private sector entities that are into space research.

NSIL: strategic activities wrt space tech, will be carried out by NSIL. It will continue with orienting space activities to demand driven* from the previous supply driven model.

IN-Space: IN-Space( Indian National space promotion and authorisation centre) will be interface between ISRO and non Governmental entities. It will be single window clearing agency that provides registration and authorisation for space activities.

ISRO: would focus on developing advance space technologies,esearch & development. Productional & operational work will be handled by the private sector participation.

II Framework for private participation:

The policy would opportunities to private sector cos and start ups to participate in space activities that includes: building of satellites,rockets and launch vehicles, Data collection and dissemination(space data).

III Global share vision

Aimed at improving India's share in global space economy to 10%, from the current share 2%
Note: Demand driven mode: means the who the customer is and what is his purpose of the launch is all known at satellite launch stage itself.
It is pertinent to note that, in June 2022, NSIL had launched India's 1st 'demand driven' communication satellite GSAT-24 for TataPlay, for DTH communications requirements in India.

Supply driven mode: capacity leased after the launch with no firm commitment by customers, in advance
