BIS introduces two new standards wrt electric vehicle

On 22 June 2024, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, announced through its official press release, that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced two new standards with respect to e-vehicles. They are

1) IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024:   These two new standards are aimed at enhancing the safety of electric vehicles in the L, M, and N categories.
These standards focus on guidelines and norms with respect to
-Power train-most important  component of electric vehicle, ensuring it meets the stringent safety requirements.
-Safety and  performance of batteries

Power train: powertrain consists of components a) that generates power to propel the vehicle forward b) that deliver power to wheels

Key components of an EV powertrain being Battery pack (electrical energy storing system),  power electronic system(manages flow of electrical energy between battery and motor), Electric motor (converts electrical to mechanical energy that drives on road), transmission (distributes the motor's output speed and torque to vehicle's wheels), thermal management system (control and manage the temperature of these component

2) IS 18294: 2023: There is also this another segment E-rickshaws and E-Karts (tuk-tuk used in business on wheels model) that are gaining popularity across India.
To address its safety norms, BIS has introduced IS 18294: 2023,
-that establishes safety standards specifically for these vehicles covering aspects from construction to functionality to ensure safety of both driver and passengers.

With these 3 new standards, BIS has till date issued a total of 30 Indian Standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems.
